- - - - Purpose
        
        It offers a model for free, self-organized education at a time when seemingly “there is no alternative” to ever-increasing tuition and accompanying student debt. By inviting people into experiences of collectivity and community, trade schools can offer experiential knowledge of economic justice to people who might otherwise dismiss these ideas as utopian or impractical.
      - The system is based on the notion that someone creates knowledge, produces it, exchanges it, and then after that exchange more new knowledge is produced either through the barter system or through the acquisition of new knowledge. Students are reminded that anyone can propose a class, that they should become teachers, too.
- - - - Purpose
        
        The school preaches that study is a necessary component of political struggle, and that study alone does not produce meaningful change. The school encourages the notion of strengthening our politics and becoming more active members in society at large.
      - The format for the curriculum is very group-oriented with an emphasis on harnessing a deeper understanding of the issues and conflicts discussed. Each group study session consists of: a set of required readings, supplementary materials, recommended materials, discussion questions, an exercise related to each session’s topic, and a reading guide.
- - - - The class structures are the standard in the education system. It is set up so the classes focus on teaching the content and the students show their mastery through evaluative tests. All of the evaluations culminate in a grade that displays the student’s mastery of the content and if the grade is satisfactory, they progress onwards to the next “level” of classes.
      - Purpose
        
        The purpose of college is to get the student prepared for their career. This includes the content side of the coin, which includes the knowledge to complete the various tasks in the career. But, the college also prepares students for the intangible side of the coin, which includes knowledge of how to interact in the workplace, etc. The college is meant to mold the individual into being the ideal candidate for jobs.

        The purpose of this university is to create a space for true “Hawaiian learning”. This learning includes acquiring knowledge about the culture and traditions of the Hawaiian people and on more traditional topics like science, all while collaborating with each other, learning, and growing together.
      - The class structures are through collaborations of students and teachers through the medium of traditional classes, workshops, cultural practice, research, or work experience. The university is just a place where various people can share and exchange their knowledge. Attending classes is only to gain the knowledge and put it into practice in daily life.
