Problem of Evil
-
-
Process theology
A.N. Whitehead
-
God is part of the world as well as outside it so to a point his powers are limited to the laws of physics that are needed for the world to exist - possess the logical limits of power not omnipotent
so, doesn't know future only possibilities & people have real free will (free will = no omnipotence)
-
cannot physically force our choices - Bible covenant between God's people & God an agreement to obey his commands & for him to be their God, he cannot make a covenant on his own can't force people to obey hi commands
-
natural evil - just like he can't force people to be morally good he can't change the natural laws of the universe now they are created
-
Strengths
solves problem of why evil occurs - God cannot prevent it (solves logical PoE) if key characteristic for a just God omnibenevolent then this God is still worthy of worship
a co-suffering God is more personal & we can identify with him - can trust God cause he wouldn't have started creation & evolution unless he knew i was for the best in the end
-
replaces the incoherent & morally-unattractive God (impassable & unilateral in power) with a God who loves his creatures & suffers with them & evolves with us - such a God is not discredited in Bible or real life
Weaknesses
many scholars argue hat process is not a theodicy as it doesn't defend the traditional notion of God in the face of evil
there's no promise of heaven; we cannot ensure our efforts on earth are rewarded, no guarantee of redemption, no assurance that good will triumph over evil, no hope God will some day right the wrongs oh history
-
-
only solves PoE by changing the definition of God - God of process theology is too weak to answer prayers & cannot be viewed as creator of universe
Mackie
-
power can only act within time on temporal agent & events, but God is meant to be transcendent (outside of time) if he is how can he act on the world

Logical problem of evil
-
-
if any of these theistic characteristics is missing then evil could exist but then God wouldn't be God
Epicurus
-
-
a materialist (world only made up of material substance), rejected belief in any deity
Mackie's problem of evil
emphasises contradiction between the statements - the problem of logical inconsistency (God can't be all the omnis & have evil exist)

moral evil
suffering that occurs by events brought about by free acts of human agents, e.g. genocide & war
easier for theist to explain as caused by free will, nat evil harder as why would omni God let it happen
natural evil
suffering that occurs by events outside of human control, e.g. earthquakes, hurricanes
the problem or evil = the problem of trying to reconcile the existence of omnipotent & wholly good god with the existence of evil & suffering in the world
