Denotation
two groups
one that have uniforms and guns in their hands
the other group stands on top of a hill with no uniforms and no weapons (that can be seen).

national guard are often used as relief for disasters within the US for civilians so for them to be attacking civilians as a threat shows them as being evil
university is a place of knowledge, so the national guard being there could be viewed as an attack on knowledge and the truth
peace rally was against the expanding influence of the US in Vietnam
soldiers were using M1 Garand rifles which were used by the US to defeat the Nazi's in WW2. could be viewed as ironic its use as its being used by an authoritative government against those who are against tyranny.
Picture was taken just before the National Guard open fired on the students resulting in the deaths of 4 students.

To depict us reaction to pace rallies as being overly dramatic and caused the deaths of 5 US students

uniforms are dark which gives the view of evil

Students on the "high ground" metaphorically and literally
National Guard going up the hill shows represents an uphill battle against counter culture movement
National Guard is more organised but the students are spread out which further demonstrates their individuality

angle of that shot shows the backs of the national guard contributing to their anonymity
Angle shows the faces of the students who were only practicing their right to protest.

Ethos
students position on being on the high ground demonstrates authority as being on the "moral high ground".
Pathos
photo creates a good vs evil perception as the students are fighting for peace while governemt is fighting for evil.
Logos
the argument being made could be demonstrating the military overcompensation of the US during the Vietnam War as it exists in the US itself for the wanting of peace in Vietnam.
