Topic 19: Ecuador's Secondary Sector
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Food and beverage industry
This, added to the refining of oil and fuel and to the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, represents 67% of the total production of Ecuador.
Dairy industry
This agro-industry is oriented towards supplying the national market. Currently, it is quite diverse: there are large, small and medium enterprises. Its wide expansion forced it to project itself on the market of neighboring countries, particularly in Venezuela.
Automotive industry
It consists of large companies that assemble or assemble cars with parts that are imported from abroad, the production of bodywork and small companies that produce car parts or accessories.
Housing and construction industry
It is a sector that is highly dependent on public investment. It is characterized by its dynamics influenced by oil exports. It requires a large supply of migrant workers.
FISHING INDUSTRY AND ARTISINAL FISHING
It has important investments in the fishing fleet and the network of refrigerators, as well as in factories for the canning and processing of fishmeal and fish oil. Their sale takes place mainly on the international market; however, the national poultry industry requires large amounts of fishmeal.
SMALL INDUSTRY AND CRAFTS.
Small businesses provide more jobs for Ecuadorans, although their output and income are lower than that of large companies. A small or microenterprise is part of a family business, with large women's participation and complementary family income from other sectors, such as industry. They are the result of efforts by people who are underemployed and looking for work.
AN OLD TRADITION
Since ancient times, human society has learned to manually produce goods that serve them to satisfy their needs. As the society developed, facilities also expanded and they were called the workshop. In Ecuador, small and medium industries exist in all regions.
