The Roles Children Play in Bullying
Labeling kids as "bullies" or "victims" can:
make them feel like their behavior can't change
fail to recognize multiple roles they play in bullying
disregard factors contributing to behavior

Kids can play more than one role in bullying
It is important to understand these roles to effectively prevent and respond to bullying
those who are bullied and bully can be at a higher risk for negative outcomes like depression or suicidal ideation
Instead of labeling as "bullies" or "victims":
Ex. change "bully" to "child who bullied"
Ex. change "victim" to "child who was bullied"
Ex. change "bully/victim" to "the child who was both bullied and bullied others"

engage in bullying behavior toward peers
Kids who are Bullied
targets of bullying behavior
Kids who Assist
may encourage bullying behavior and occasionally join in
Kids who Reinforce
not directly involved, but give the bullying an audience by laughing or supporting

often want to help but don't know how
Kids who Defend
actively comfort the child being bullied
