Responding to Bullying
Do:
intervene immediately
separate kids involved
make sure everyone is safe
check for medical/mental health needs
stay calm
model respectful behavior
Don't:
ignore it
immediately try to get facts
force kids to publicly say what they saw
question children in public
talk to the involved kids together
make them apologize on the spot
get police/medical attention immediately if:
there's a weapon
there are threats of serious physical injury
there are threats of hate-motivated violence
there is serious bodily harm
there is sexual abuse
anyone is accused of an illegal act
Getting the Facts
keep involved children separate
get story from several sources
listen without blaming
don't call it "bullying" before you know the facts
Determine if it's Bullying
Do the involved kids have history?
Is there a power imbalance?
Has this happened before?
Is the child worried it will happen again?
Have the kids dated?
