Public Health and the Carceral State
What is the author's purpose for writing this paper/conducting this research? I believe the authors purpose for writing this texts or conducting this research had to do with the unfortunate act of basically forced sterilization in men but especially in women. It also provides information on the use of sterilization and contraceptives to keep white supremacy.
The texts really shined light on how the "forced" sterilization or contraceptives were a used in correctional facilities with the claim of reducing production of children being born into a bad life. However, they did this in an awful way by using these contraceptives or vasectomies be an incentive for getting out sooner. So while it was voluntary it was not for the right reasons.
What are the main points of this text? Can you put them into your own words? The main points of this text include things like semi-voluntary contraceptives and sterilization of men and women being incarcerated, the movement started by black women to have the rights of having a child under there morals and choices, as well as things like legal invoulantart sterilization to keep "unwanted" children from being born.
This text does a great job oof allowing readers to get a better understanding of how sterilization for any period of time can affect populations of many. Any person should be allowed to have a child under their own will doing it the way they want without the law or anything else telling them otherwise. Things like legal involuntary sterilization to keep "unwanted" children out of our world is unfair and definitely worth being addressed in this text.
Can you work out the steps of the argument being presented? I think the steps of the argument being presented are laid out very nicely. All points in the text have very informative information that allows readers to get a better understanding of the research and argument being discussed.
Do all the steps follow logically? I think that the steps of this text follow very logically. They discuss each topic well while also relating it back to their overall argument. Allowing them to come to many different conclusions including things like all people should have free access to comprehensive contraceptives. As well as legal involuntary sterlization being wrong and unfair under any and all circumstances.
What is the author's purpose for writing this paper/conducting this research? The purpose of writing this paper or conducting this research was to highlight the health of those in the criminal justice system in early adulthood.
These people include those who have been arrested, those in jail or prision, and more. Throughout the research they were able to find evidence leading to the role of the criminal justice system that is shaping and finding patterns in black-white health gaps from teen years to early adulthood.
Do you agree of disagree with the author? Why? I agree with the author. I agreee because they do a great job of outlining all valid reasonings ass to how Soft sterilization and long acting reversible contraceptives in the Carceral State have affected many different populations throughout the years. They shine the light on how these things have affected women specifically while highlighting the affect on African American women as well.
I believe all these things are important to the text because it helps readers understand the text and get a better grasp of the research being conducted. It also shines light on things that need to be addressed like forced sterilization of certain minority groups which many people may not know about, however, it is important to know.
What connections do you see between this and other texts? What are the wider implications etc? Connections that I made while reading this article included discussions we have had in class discussing ford sterilization of certain minority groups and how wrong and unfair that is.
Many people do not think of the affects these things can have on people and this article as well as other things we have talked about in class have helped me appreciate this text at a greater level than I would have before. We have touched on minorities and health inequalities a lot in this class and this article is just another example of how those things are relevant in many. different areas.
What are the main points of this text? Can you put them into your own words? Some of the main points of this text include the rapid increase of persons being imprisoned over the years, as well as how racal inequality plays a role in those being incarcerated.
It is unfortunately not shocking to find that often times black men or black communities are places that the police force are finding themselves in more often. There can be a variety fo reasons for this but the one reason of racial inequality is an unfair point. People in the black community can often have a bad stigma of being involved with the wrong crowd or doing the wrong thing. This has made it to where the police are more attentive when looking to find something go wrong when it comes to people of the black community which is unfair.
Can you work out the steps of the argument being presented? I definitely can work out the steps of the argument being presented. I know that often times teens or young adults are not often looking to be in some type of correctional facility.
Do all the steps follow logically?I think the steps follow logically because when you look at any group of people especially minorities you will often find that they are likely to have some form of depression, anxiety, etc. When getting arrested and put in the correctional facilities this can worsen the depressive or anxiety symptoms only giving them less hope for a better life.
Often times the people in these siituatioionsss are low in socioeconomic status and have less going for themselves than the average person. Because of this they may end up iim the wrong crowd. It is found that black boys and men with low socioeconomic status have an unfair advantage of ending up imprisoned early in adulthood.
Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why? I definitely agree with the author. They did a great job of shining light on the racial inequalities when it comes to the criminal justice system. They also have results showing that the more a person land in a correctional facility the higher the likelihood of depressive symptoms.
I think that this makes complete sense. When you are in a place like a prison you are pretty much completely shut off from the real world. Often times terrible things happen in prisons to that you have little to no control over such as rape, harassment, sexual harassment, beatings from other inmates, etc. All of these things are like to lead to more depressive symptoms. The more you are in a correctional facility the more likely you are to encounter any of these terrible things along with being isolated and pretty much alone.
What connections do you see between this and other texts? What are the wider implications etc? This article reminded me of the black liives matter movement. The BLM movement is huge right now and a big part of it its how unfair some police officers are to the black and minoriity communities.
While reading this article I was able to make connections to things I have seen in the news, read in articles, talked about with my peers, etc. Awful things have happened in unfortunate situations that could have been avoided and this article shines light on the idea that there is a disadvantage to the black community when it comes to certain police officers.
