Bauhaus
impact today
only lasted 14 years but the legacy continues to be felt around the world & in reality prepared us for modern life, taking creative risks & leaps of imagination & set a benchmark for how we live our lives today
tough is that beauty isn't marginal, its a part of human understanding
Bauhaus simplest form is about the most refined forms - shops like IKEA about mass production but with attention to design is the things of their dreams - iPhones, the marriage of beauty & function is what they were all about
-
-
post WW1, Bauhaus & the development of furniture for mass production
post WW1 they believe in uniting art & industrial design - had revolutionary approach to design that got rid of barriers surrounding different crafts & skills & encouraged experimentation
major inspiration was the large-scale wartime adoption of metal tubing as a replacement for wood which could be weak due to its irregular grain structure
-
the simple tubular steel frames transformed the way furniture was designed & made - meant that machines could be used to create an entire frame for a chair or table without needing to rely in traditional handcrafting skills - paved way for many industrial furniture-making skills that are still used today
what was it?
a design school for sculptors, artists & architects to work together to develop new design sin the Bauhaus style
incorporated significant influences rom international scenes, teaching programmes, the buildings & lives of teachers & students
Gropius brought together a impressive people of many disciplines to teach there of all different styles
aims
-
aimed to unite art, craft & technology after WW1
relinquish ornamentation, focusing on the aesthetics associated with the manufacturing process
-
-
-
the young optimistic lively student who often through extravagant parties were a bit too radical for the small town of Weimar to the point that the school had to move to Dessau
there they were able to build a very modern school building with a glass curtain wall & steel structure
-
Meyer
-
despite Marxist sympathies he embraced capitalism - made Bauhaus more financially secure but large num of student were communist & dedicated to the cause & some extreme right wingers - causing a divide in the student body
Germanies conservative views & leading toward to Nazi party eventually meant Meyer was asked to leave
-
1923 was their first exhibit after governmental pressure- built a house to be moved after the exhibit fully furnished by the students to show their belief of what modern living should be like
impressed global scene but locals & government weren't impressed & didn't like it, leading to defunding by 50%
large right-wing opposition to the schools 'un-German' Bauhaus & their not strict teaching methods, against the modernistic architecture, etc
partially led to Gropius leaving after 9 years - Meyer took over to make architecture more important
People came out of WW1 and wanted to see change, the old world wasn’t trusted any more, and the Bauhaus was a direct result of that, they wanted different art, architecture and education. Driven by this new radical thing Gropius (the founder) decided to accept the invitation from Weimar to take over the school of applied arts but instead of just taking over he merged it with the school of fine arts, bringing all the disciplines under one roof. This was just the idea of Bauhaus to mix up these thing to see there is no barrier of any real meaning – when you make a chair it’s a very practical thing but beyond that it should be beautiful.

Charles & Ray Eames work with the LCW (lounge chair wood) was synonymous with the movement with its functional, minimal material formed to give continuous unbroken curves
