Legal Considerations
It protects school administrators from personnel liability in federal court.
The absences of it can jeopardize a district's case before the Texas Commissioner of Education.
The amount of documentation will be necessary depending on the case.
Ethical Considerations
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Alert employees to performance deficiencies.
If the deficiencies are remediable, provide employees with written directives for improvement and provide a reasonable time frame for improvement to occur.
Provide feedback through periodic assessment.
If a negative employment decision is contemplated, notify the affected employees of their rights under district policy.
Follow school policies and regulations scrupulously.
Political Considerations
If an employee challenges your negative employment decision often will be the governing board.
fair treatment will diminish the employee's ability to undermine your credibility among staff members by alleging arbitrary administrative action.
Documentation
A good documentation system will minimize misunderstandings between you and the employee about performance problems and reveal to you patterns of deficiencies that emerge over time.
It will also provide you with the opportunity to recognize and applaud good work.
Conducting Appraisals
Teachers most be appraised at least once a year.
A teacher may be appraised less frequently if the teacher agrees in writing and the teacher's most recent evaluation rated the teacher at least proficient and did not indicate any area of deficiency.
The appraiser must be the teacher's supervisor or a person approved by the school board.
