Presentation
Infant stops tolerating feeds
milk aspiration
bile stained vomiting
Abdo distension, tense, shiny skin
fresh blood in stool
shock
X-ray features
distended loops of bowel
thickening of bowel wall
intramural gas
gas in portal tract
bowel perf visible
can also be detected by transillumination
Tx
stop oral feeding
broad spectrum antibiotics
parenteral nutrition
artificial ventilation may be needed due to abdo distension
circulatory support if shock
surgery for bowel necrosis or perf
Comps
mortality = 20%
strictures
malabsorption (esp if extensive bowel resection)
