may go back forth between steps - e.g. sketching first then carrying out research then continue designing then finding out more info
can carry out evaluation of design at any point in design process - possibly to analyse research or evaluate ideas & models

helps avoid design fixation - especially important if the design you are fixated on is not the best possible one & might have flaws uncovered by iterative design
