Creating Positive School Environments for Effective Inclusion
Defining the problem
Bullying, teasing, and harassment is practiced by most students.
Most of the time this behavior has been allowed, ignored, or modeled by adults. Bullying and teasing has been accepted as rites of passage for youth which some believe is just a normal part of their childhood and adolescent experiences.
Those who bully tend to bully other children who seem vulnerable like those who are passive, anxious, quiet, sensitive, or unusual in some way.
Schools also contribute to this problem by labeling students and separating students based on their abilities.
How to create a caring community
Schools should implement antibullying and antiviolence programs to reduce bullying and teasing of youth.
Have warm, caring, positive, and involved authoritative adults
Be committed to setting firm limits for unacceptable behavior
Be committed to consistent application of non-hostile and non- physical sanctions for offenders.
The Second Step Program
Second step program is an exemplary violence violence prevention program
It is a research based, teacher friendly curriculum, training for educators, and includes a parent education component.
Students learn how to recognize and understand their feelings, make positive and effective choices, and keep anger from escalating to violence.
Preventing Disability Harassment
Create a campus environment that is aware of disability concerns and harassment.
Encourage parents, staff members, and people in the community to talk about disability harassment.
Use monitoring programs to follow up on resolved issues of disability harassment.
Provide appropriate training to staff and students to hand harassment.
