Bio HW: Respiratory System
Components of respiratory system and their function
:
Opening Points
Nose / Nasal Cavity
Tongue/ Oral Cavity
Air Pipe
Pharynx
common passage for food and air
Esophagus - food pipe
Larynx (Voice cord)
connects air to trachea
has muscles that vibrate
trachea - wind pipe
Bronchi - Bronchioles
Air that enters here then makes its way to the alveoli
Bronchus - Right main Bronchus and left main bronchus
Diaphram
contracts while inhalation and relaxes while exhaling so other air doesn't get disturbed
A muscular sub partition that inhales and exhales and help expand the ribs when you inhale and exhale
Intercostal mucles pull the rib cage up when you inhale
Diaphram relaxes in exhalation
Epiglottis when breathing it folds up while swallowing it folds down to prevent food from entering
Conchae/Nasal Cavity
Traps air and warms the air particles in (Nares/Nostrils)
Single Alveoili is alveoilus
Capillaries accept oxygen and send carbon dioxide out
Ways to maintain or improve respiratory system health.
Respiratory disorders
Common cold
influenza
acute bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchi
Pneumonia
Inflammation of bronchioles and alveoli
Deadly Disorders
Chronic Bronchitis
Bronchi becomes inflamed and narrow
Caused by Tabaco smoke
emphysema
alveoli becomes overstretched
Lung cancer - Mostly caused from Tabaco smoke
Maintain a healthy weight
Excess weight compresses respiratory muscles putting more pressure on lungs
drinking more water
Makingthe mucus along your airways more sticky and common to illnesses
Eating food rich in vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants
Which can help reduce inflammation and fight oxidative damage
Limit exposure to common allergens such as dust, pollen, and animal dander, etc.
Maintain good hygiene so no viruses spread causing illnesses
No alcohol as it dehydrates your body
Aerobic activity helps get your body much more active increasing your breathing and air exchange
Add indoor plants as it helps improve air quality
Functions of the Respiratory System:
The exchange of carbon dioxide with oxygen
This occurs when the oxygen enters the alveoli and capillaries give up their waste carbon dioxide in return for oxygen
Co2 is exhaled through the same air system
Oxygen picked up by the blood returns to the heart
Protects against particles that may be harmful when inhaled
Transport Air within and without the lungs
Diaphragm contracts as we breathe in as lungs inhale and relax when lung exhale
Rib cage expands forward, rib muscles contract on inhale while diaphram contracts and move downward
rib cage goes small and rib muscles relax as diaphram moves upword on exhale
