Digestive System - Coggle Diagram
Digestive System
The digestive system is an example of an organ system in which several organs work together to digest and absorb food
-
-
-
-
-
Oesophagus - When swallowing food, the walls squeeze together to push food down
-
-
-
-
Pancreas - A gland organ in the abdomen that produces insulin and other important enzymes to break down food which is transported into the small intestine
Mouth - Breaks down the food so that it it is easier to digest, while saliva mixes with food to begin the process of digestion
-
-
-
Physical digestion
-
Stomach (churning) - breaks food into smaller pieces to increase the surface area for chemical digestion
An enzyme is a biological catalyst which speeds up a chemical reaction in living organisms. They are large proteins which catalyse a specific reaction due to the shape of the active site being complementary to the shape of one specific substrate
-
In reality the active site changes shape a bit as the substrate binds to it. This enables a tighter fit, and is called the induced fit model.
Digestive enzymes convert large food molecules into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
