In 1917 the third battle of Ypres began, where a a series of battles over two months included an attack on passchendaele.
The third battle of Ypres began as it was believed that the Germans were on the verge of collapse, due to them pulling back 40km from the Somme battlefield to the Hindenburg line in Feb 1917.
Haig thought that one big blow could finish them off, so plans were made to capture Passchendaele.
