The Learning Theory of Attachment: - Coggle Diagram
The Learning Theory of Attachment:
Classical Conditioning: Cupboard love
UCS - food
UCR - pleasure
NS - feeder + UCS - food
CS - feeder
CR - pleasure
Operant Conditioning:
Positive reinforcement:
Baby unsettled and cries - caregiver feeds the baby and the baby feels comforted, this strengthens attachment
Negative reinforcement:
Mother receives negative reinforcement as the crying stops, strengthens attachment
Evaluation:
W - Counter evidence from animal research
Lorenz's geese study showed that attachment is a result of imprinting
Harlow's research demonstrated that attachments are formed through comfort rather than food
W - Counter evidence from human research
Schaffer & Emerson found that attachment is a result of sensitive responsiveness
W - Learning Theory views the baby as passive
Interactional synchrony between mother and baby is high when there is a strong attachment between them (Isabella + Brazelton)
The theory:
Attachment learnt through OC + CC
Baby attaches to the person who feeds them (CC)
OC strengthens bond - +VE + food -VE = mother
