What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge
constraints: restriction,
pursuit: to find out more, research
knowledge: information someone gains through their experience.
aspect 1: for human sciences results can be biased without controlled variables e.g. art depends on interpretation
aspect 2: for natural sciences ideas tend to either be right or wrong and there is little room for interpretation.
aspect 3; religion can prevent people from sharing their results
What counts as a good justification or claim?
justification: there is a strong reason why something should be believed
claim: something you declare is right
aspect 1: when we have results that are reliable or repeatable such as the empirical method
aspect 2: something that cannot be falsifiable
aspect 3: when other professionals agree with you
Should some knowledge not be sought on ethical grounds
ethical grounds: what is morally correct.
sought: looking into or about something
Aspect 1:religion maybe a type of knowledge is not accepted
Aspect 2: testing on human can break morally excepted rules
Aspect 3: some knowledge has the right to be sought for certain reasons
Are some things unknowable?
unknowable: not being able to understand it
aspect 1: untestable information such as space
aspect 2: in situations where there are many possible results but no way to prove which one is correct
aspect 3: something is in a language you cannot understand
Why do we seek knowledge?
aspects 1: to prove instincts that we already have
Aspect 2: to gain an understanding of why we do things or why things happen
aspect 3: it is human nature to seek knowledge
What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?
relationship: the connection between 2 or more things
aspect 1: personal experience can effect your knowledge
what is the relationship between knowledge and culture
your culture can strongly influence your knowledge
