1. Apps
Operational

Inward-facing
Inventory, warehousing, point-of-sale, payoff, production support, human resources or accounting
Outward-facing

Retailers and suppliers use to interact with your firm (supply chain management, logistics or procurement)
The apps that support core business processes and transactions
The apps automate mundane, repetitive transactional activities (reduce-time consuming), error-prone manual tasks or facilitate collaboration
Strategic
apps that generate/create competitive advantage by doing something valuable
the main data mainly comes from operational apps
introduce new ways for outsiders to interact with your firm
expand into new lines of business and exploit proprietary data in new ways to help make better decisions
if rivals replicate a strategic app, it eventually becomes an operational app and making apps harder to copy
2. Infrastructure
Digital Plumbing
moves data and stores data
Data Management

help people, organizations optimize the use of data within the bounds of policy and regulation

3. Data
Everything else in a firm’s IT portfolio exists solely to serve it
IT’s raison-d’être
Infrastructure is its conduit
Apps are what scrub it(data) into business insight
Collected by transaction processing systems or “enterprise” systems
Increasingly collected and consumed by connected machines
Proprietary data-collected yourself-most potent for constructing competitive barriers
Proprietary apps ~ barbed-wire fence
Proprietary data ~ moat
Their combination ~ Kevlar
