CHAPTER 1
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, THE INTERNET, AND YOU
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
- Hardware - consists of the physical equipment. Its controlled by software and processes data to create information.
- Procedures - Rules or guidelines to follow when using software, hardware, and data. Typically documented in manuals written by computer professionals.
- Data - consists unprocessed facts, include text, numbers, images and sound. Information is data has been processed by computer.
- People - The purpose of information systems to make people or end users.
- The Internet allows computers to connect and share information
- Software (programs) - provides step-by-step instructions to control computer to convert data into information.
- To efficiently and effectively use the computer, you need to understand information technology (IT), including software, hardware, data, and connectivity.
-
SOFTWARE
-
Application Software - includes general-purpose ,specialized, and mobile application.
- General purpose - widely used in nearly all career areas.
- Specialized - focus more on specific disciplines and occupations.
- Apps (mobile apps, mobile application) - designed for mobile devices, most popular are for text messaging, Internet and social networks.
DATA - Is the raw unprocessed facts about something. Common file types include
- Document files created by word processors.
- Worksheet files created by spreadsheet programs.
- Database files created by database management programs.
- Presentation files created by presentation software programs.
HARDWARE - consists of electronic devices that can follow instructions to accept input, process input and produce information
Personal Computer Hardware
- System unit contains electronic circuitry, including microprocessors and memory. Random-access memory (RAM) holds the program and data.
- Input/output devices are translators between humans and computers. Input devices include keyboard and mouse. Most common output device is computer display (monitor).
- Secondary storage holds data and program. Include hard disks, solid-state storage, and optical discs (CD, DVD, and Blu-ray).
- Communication devices allow personal computers to communicate with other computers systems. Modems modify audio, video and other types of data across internet.
- Types of Computers - Supercomputer, mainframe, midrange (server) and personal computers (PCs).
Personal computes can be desktop, laptop (notebook computer), tablet, smartphone, wearable.
