Measurements of Contructs
Conceptualization, the mental process by which fuzzy and imprecise contracts and their components are defined in concrete and precise terms.
Unidimensional contracts are those that are expected to have a single underlying dimension.
Multidimensional, constructs consisting of two or more underlying dimensions.
Operationalization, the process of developing indicators or items for measuring constructs.
Variable, combination of indicators at the empirical level representing a given construct.
Quantitative values are numeric
Qualitative variables are non-numeric
Reflective indicator, a measure that reflects an underlying construct
Formative indicator, a measure that forms or contributes to an underlying construct.
Level of Measurement
Level of measurement, also called rating scales-refer to the values that an indicator can take.
Nomincal Scales, also called categorical scales measure categorical data.
Ordinal Scales, measure rank-ordered data
Interval Scales, those where the value measured are not only rank-ordered, but are equidistant from adjacent attributes.
Ratio Scales, those that have all the qualities of nominal, ordinal, and interval scales, and in addition also have a true point (where the value zero implies lack or non-availibilty of the underlying construct.
Binary Scales, are nominal scales consisting of binary items that assume one of two possible values, such as yes or no, true or false..etc.
Likert scale, a scale to measure ordinal data in social science research.
Semantic Differential Scale, composite scale where respondents are asked to indicate their opinions or feelings toward a single statement using different pairs of adjectives framed as polar opposites.

Scaling, a branch of measurement that involves the construction of measures by associating qualitative judgments about unobservable constructs with quantitative, measurable metric units.
Scale, empirical structure for measuring items or indicators of a given construct.
Thurstons's equal-appearing scaling method, used to track respondents behavior, attitude towards the topic as favorable or unfavorable.
Likert's summative scaling method, a unidimensional scaling method, for gauging feedback and information, making it easier to understand and respond.
Guttman's cumulative scaling method, measures how much of a positive or negative attitude a person has towards a particular topic.
Index, a composite score derived from aggregating measures of mutiple constructs using a set of rules and formulas.
Typology, measurements of two or more constructs to create a set of categories or types.
