Choice of research area
Before starting research, sociologists have to choose which topic to study

Choice will be affected by the values of the researcher. A person's own position and outlook on life will influence what the choose to study
Sociologists may have there own interests as professionals. This may lead to them specialising in one specific area
Sociologists may be influenced by the practicalities of carrying out research. Research that is totally impractical and time consuming less likely to be carried out.
Similarly, research that presents serious ethical issues is less likely to be conducted than one that does not
