        Challenges faced by managers of ethnic minorities
        As a consequence of the success of many of the affirmative action programs, along with the growing number of more experienced and better educated ethnic minority members, managers, members of minorities, are no longer rare in managerial positions.
        Of course, every new manager has to adapt, but for many of those from ethnic minorities, the adjustments or adaptations are greater.
        
        Again those damn expectations
        Decades of negative expectations from a large proportion of both non-minority and minority segments of society are difficult to eradicate, and you as the manager of an ethnic minority cannot help but be in the limelight.
        Some of your subordinates, especially those who have been culturalized to develop perceptions of stereotypes of other people, may unconsciously expect you to fail or they will set higher standards of performance for you than for anyone else.
        When it fails, this can be perceived as a result of ethnicity, when a white boss fails, however, it is perceived as simply human error (it is human for whites to fail, isn't it?).
        
        Does mythology provide food for the hungry, intellectually speaking?
        Don't live up to the expectations of others.
        What can you as a member of an ethnic minority do about negative expectations of others?
        First, don't live up to negative expectations; remember that you too may be programmed to expect others to perceive you differently, which is not always true.
        So you may be wasting time and energy experiencing an event that may not come to pass.
        Wish the high life, not the other way around! Second, try to get to know your subordinates well and let them get to know you. Prejudice, as we have concluded, is the act of prejudging.
        Knowing you well can help. Third, seek excellence in your performance, as any manager should. Get acquainted with modern management theories and skills.
        Increase your own skills by attending management classes or seminars.
        And finally, be fair and consistent in your dealings with all of your subordinates. Don't engage in the same kind of bias activities as some white men. Above all, do not stoop to the level of someone who "attacked" you.
