Migration: a global question
The majority situation
An even greater problem is the flow of refugees that has increased worldwide.
It is difficult, therefore, to establish what people who have migrated to their destination countries do.
Migration is a truly global issue, not only because of the huge number of people who move but because of the impact it has on the international community.
Here we will refer to the majority of people who travel to another country to work.
The transnational families
The transnational family is the result of international migration. Its members are in more than
one country.
The transnational family is expanded. It is made up of the father, the mother, their offspring and other members that replace those who are absent, such as grandparents, uncles or neighbors.
In the last decades families have changed in the world and in our environment. There is an increase in divorces and new marriages, reduction in the number of sons and daughters, variety of relationships, ways of sharing family spaces, etc. Migrations have caused special situations.
Relationship between nationals and foreigners
Level of education, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, being male or female, one's nationality, religion, and other characteristics
On the other hand, there is a lot of tension with the Africans. Negative reactions to certain groups of immigrants from Colombia, Peru, Haiti and Cuba are increasing. Another widespread issue is to relate immigrants to crime.
Women and migration
In 1960, women represented 47% of the total
migration. Currently, they represent 48%. Process called the feminization of migrations.
A large part of women who migrate work in what is called the care economy. All these activities are related to the traditional roles assigned to women. Women who are in irregular conditions and fail to place themselves at work become vulnerable. Many perform sex work and others fall into trafficking networks and are sexually exploited.
This silence about the Female migration, among other reasons, is due to the fact that until the mid-20th century, on average, there were more men than women.
Coexistence in the country of destination
Work activities take up most of the time. Many people are engaged in jobs that in the countries of destination are not much appreciated, for example, construction, agriculture and services. Wages are better than those of their countries of origin.
Those who are in an irregular situation, that is, without a work visa, face greater exploitation and the risk of being deported, even with the threat of being denounced. They accept jobs in situations of disadvantage such as prolonged working hours and less pay.
Usually, before traveling, people who migrate already think where they will arrive and have contacts to look for work. Then they locate where they will live and specify the work. For all this, very active networks work in the countries of destination. Once installed, newcomers make friends and organize everyday life.
Refugees
There is very frequent news of people who have died in rafts trying to reach the shores of Europe, or groups that they challenge border barriers to go from one country to another.
They know the dangers they face but they keep trying but they can't stay where their life was threatened and their rights violated.
