Concept Connections
Growth of Global Middle Class
Climate Change
As GoGMC increases, there is more consumption which leads to more demand + production of goods which impacts CO2 emissions and climate change
Poverty Reduction
Climate Change
Water Availability + Consumption
Inc. in GMC, as they develop more water is being consumed as the GMC population grows
Food Consumption + Availability
Less water and more food being consumed means there will be food shortages globally in the near future and famines in certain regions now
Food availability + consumption
Obesity
New Global Middle Class: people with directionally income (annual $3650 - 36500). Can spend on consumer goods, private healthcare, holidays, cars, etc.
Mexico: Soda, Corn
34% of children (5-11) are overweight
Water Availability + Consumption
-> current water consumption rates are reckless and the available water in the world cannot keep up with it. no water = nothing to grow crops + feed livestock with = no food for people = drastic reduction in food availability + no farmers = no income = no money to buy food with
Poverty Reduction
GoGMC
Climate Change
Increased Food Demand
Increased Water Demand
Water Availability + Consumption
Climate Change
-> rainfall patterns becoming more erratic and extreme= restricts water availability around the world [sub-saharan Africa]. while increasing it in other places [southeast asia].
-> rising sea levels due to climate change [permafrost melt, icecap melt, etc.] can taint surface level freshwater sources => reducing the little water availability humanity has [1% of total water available]
E.G Lake Chad in Sub-Saharan Africa where people from 4 countries have lost a crucial water source, both for their livelihoods and general lives => plunged into poverty + unstable region breeding ground for potential conflict/terrorism
climate change:
Physical Water Scarcity: occurs when there is not enough water to meet all demands. (Arid regions often)
Economic Water Scarcity: is caused by a lack of investment in water or a lack of human capacity to satisfy the demand for water.
Change in water accessibility
Decreased Food Availability
Decrease in Food + Water Consumption
In an attempt to preserve what is left
Not by choice, simply because there isn't anything to consume
China: Meat
Many imported meat from USA
CO2 producing
