Definition of Terms in Nanotechnology
What is Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnologies are a group of emerging technologies, characterized by the production, manipulation, control and application of matter in the nanoscale in order to make use of size- and structure-dependent properties and phenomena, as distinct from those associated with individual atoms or molecules or with bulk materials.
What is Nanoscale?
length range approximately from 1 nm to 100 nm
Note 1 to entry: Properties that are not extrapolations from larger sizes are predominantly exhibited in this length range
What is Nano-objects?
-Discrete piece of material with one, two or three external dimensions in the nanoscale (2.1)
-Material with one, two or three external dimensions in the nanoscale.
Note 1 to entry: The second and third external dimensions are orthogonal to the first dimension and to each other.
Nanoparticle
nano-object (2.2) with all three external dimensions in the nanoscale (2.1)
Note 1 to entry: If the lengths of the longest to the shortest axes of the nano-object differ significantly (typically by more than three times), the terms nanofibre (2.5) or nanoplate (2.6) are intended to be used instead of the term nanoparticle.

Nanostructure (definition)
Composition of inter-related constituent parts, in which one or more of those parts is a nanoscale region
Note 1 to entry: A region is defined by a boundary representing a discontinuity in properties
Nanostructured material (definition)
Material having internal nanostructure or surface nanostructure
Note 1 to entry: This definition does not exclude the possibility for a nano-object to have internal structure or surface structure. If external dimension(s) are in the nanoscale, the term nano-object is recommended

Nanostructures powders: powder comprising nanostructured agglomerates, nanostructured aggregates or other particles of nanostructured material
Nanopore
cavity with at least one dimension in the nanoscale which may contain a gas or liquid
Nanocomposite
solid comprising a mixture of two or more phase-separated materials, one or more being nanophase
Note 1 to entry: Gaseous nanophases are excluded [they are covered by nanoporous material (3.4)].
Note 2 to entry: Materials with nanoscale (2.1) phases formed by precipitation alone are not considered to be nanocomposite materials.
polymer matrix nanocomposite: nanocomposite (3.2) with at least one major polymeric phase
polymer clay nanocomposite: polymer matrix nanocomposite (3.2.1) with a nanostructured (2.10) clay phase
metal matrix nanocomposite: nanocomposite with at least one major metallic phase
ceramic matrix nanocomposite: nanocomposite with at least one major ceramic phase
Nanodispersion
material in which nano-objects or a nanophase are dispersed in a continuous phase of a different composition
Fluid Nanodispersion: heterogeneous material in which nano-objects or a nanophase are dispersed in a continuous fluid phase of a different composition
Nanofoam
liquid or solid matrix, filled with a second, gaseous phase, typically resulting in a material of much lower density with a nanostructured matrix, for example having nanoscale struts and walls, or a gaseous nanophase consisting of nanoscale bubbles (closed nanofoam), or both
Nanophase
physically or chemically distinct region or collective term for physically distinct regions of the same kind in a material with the discrete regions having one, two or three dimensions in the nanoscale
Engineered Nanomaterial, Manufactured Nanomaterial and Incidental Nanomaterial
Engineered nanomaterial:
nanomaterial designed for a specific purpose or function
Manufactured nanomaterial:
nanomaterial intentionally produced for commercial purposes to have specific properties or specific composition
Incidental nanomaterial:
nanomaterial (2.4) generated as an unintentional by-product of a process
