Verbs:
Transitive verb:
A verb that holds an object.
- E.g. the man kicked the ball.
- E.g. Bob threw the ball.
Intransitive verb:
A verb that does not hold an object
- E.g. the man yawned
- E.g. John died
Action verb:
Describes an action occurring.
- E.g. swim, eat, bake, slap. dig, sob
- E.g. he climbed the building.
Stative verb:
Describes a state of being.
- E.g. is, have, feel, be, was, had/has.
Modal verb:
Sets up probability/possibility
- E.g. can, may, should, could, would, will.
Auxiliary verb:
Establishes the tense.
- E.g. he had been swimming.
- E.g. I will be able to leave.
- E.g. I am going to go.
Dummy verb:
Unnecessary verb 'do' used in interrogatives.
- E.g. do you like minecraft?
Phrasal verb:
Usually a two-word verb - both crucial to sentence.

Time adverb:
When did the verb perform?
- E.g. it crashed yesterday.
- E.g. I will call you later
Place adverb:
Where did the verb perform?
- E.g. it crashed over there
- E.g she went downstairs.
Manner adverb:
How did the verb perform?
- E.g. it crashed catastrophically
Frequency adverb:
How often the verb performs.
- E.g. it crashed repeatedly.
- E.g. they usually quarrel.
Degree adverb:
How much did the verb perform?
- E.g. it crashed a lot.
- E.g. there was much jumping.
Confirmation/negation:
Did the verb perform or not?
Comment adverb:
How well did the verb perform?
Adjectives:
Quality adjective:
What state the noun is in.
- Colour, shape, size.
- E.g. clever, nice, beautiful
Quantity adjective:
Roughly how many there are.
- Few, some, many, hundreds
- E.g. no, all, little, enough.
- E.g. half, a lot, numerous, sparse
Number adjectives:
Exactly how many there are.
- E.g. there were 5 chickens.
- E.g. two children
Demonstrative adjectives:
Where/whose the noun is.
- Related to deixis.
- E.g. these, that, those, theirs, this.
- E.g. these mangoes are rotting.
Interrogative adjectives:
Question adjectives.
- E.g. which house?
- E.g. what car?
Nouns:
Common noun:
Things that are real, actual things.
- E.g. wind, planet, head, table, sky.
Abstract noun:
Things that are purely hypothetical and intangible.
- E.g. bravery, love, hate, fear, jealousy.
Proper noun:
Unique individual places, people or things.
Collective noun:
A term for a collection of things.
- pile, swarm, collection, set, bagful.
Pronoun:
Replaces a noun to avoid repetition.
Conjunctions:
Co-ordinating conjunction:
Links equal clauses.
- E.g. for, so, and, or, nor, yet, but.
- FANBOYS
- For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
Sub-ordinating conjunction:
Links main clauses to subordinate clauses.

Correlative conjunction:
Co-ordinating conjunctions coming in pairs.
