Topic 2 Science
2.1 Plant adaptations
-
-
For example: Spruce trees in Artic
- Thin, strong needle like leaves to prevent water loss
- Trees have tall, narrow shape so snow can lie without breaking the branches
2.3 ecology
-
-
- Sampling is a technique which by finding results by collecting a small representative part for an area
2.5 Decomposers
Decomposers are organisms that get their food or energy from dead organisms or waste products produced
-
For example, worms help to break down dead leaves. Molecules and atoms released from the dead leaves can be part of a new plant grown. Besides that, the worms get energy from the leaves, birds and other animals eat the worms and get energy too. The food chain allows the energy to be transported to everyone inside.
2.2 Animal adaptions
Animals have structural and behavioral adaptations like plants which can help them to survive in their own habitats.
For example: Sealions in the sea
- Smooth, streamlined body to help them move fast in the water
- Legs are flippers to to paddle faster
- Hold breath over an hour to hunt their prey longer
- Sharp teeth to digest their prey
2.6 Populations
-
Factors that affect the population:
- Predators
- Food supply
- Their own species
2.7 Pollution
-
Example of pollution: Agricultural water pollution
- Fertilizer accidentally/ trashed to a lake
- Increases the growth of algae and water plants
- Plants and algae cover the surface of the water and stop light from getting below to plants underneath
4.Plants underneath die and composers increases.
- They feed on the plants and the population becomes large
- They take all the oxygen away and fish dies
2.8 Habitat destruction
-
Each species are adapted to live in a particular habitat. If the certain habitat is destroyed, the species living in there will die.
