Energy Transfer & Productivity
Maximising Crop Growth
Fertilisers
Nitrates for protein synthesis and growth
Magnesium ions for chlorophyll synthesis and photosynthesis
Phosphorus for ATP/DNA
Advantage: already nitrate/magnesium ions so quick to absorb
Disadvantage: more soluble so leaches easily
Manure
Advantage: less soluble molecules (proteins, etc.) so less leaching and organic material aerates soil (stops it being compacted)
Disadvantage: unknown amounts of nutrients
Weed Killers (herbicides)
Removes competition for nutrients/water/light/space
Pesticides/Biological Control
Remove organisms eating the crop
Netting/coverage
GM or Selective Breeding
Select fast growing variety
Higher yield crop
Disease resistant crop
Herbicide resistant crop
Greenhouse & Irrigation
Increase light/temperature/carbon dioxide levels
Ensure water is not a limiting factor
Ploughing
To aerate soil/improve drainage (aerobic rather than anaerobic conditions so more nitrification and less denitrification by microorganisms)
Maximising Animal Growth
Restricted Movement
Less respiration
Less energy loss
Warm Environment
Less heat generated to maintain body temperature
Less respiration
Less energy loss
GM or Selective Breeding
Energy transferred to biomass/growth rate
Slaughtered Just Before Maturity
Maximum energy input to growth of biomass, rather than sustaining it
