TOK: KQs related to NS in the Youtube video
SCOPE
Could there be scientific problems that are currently unknown because the technology needed to reveal them doesn't exist yet?
just like how U-235 haven't been known to the society of scientists in the 19th century, due to lack of technological developments, it is plausible that there are scientific problems that are unknown to us because our technology is limited.
Is prediction the primary purpose of scientific knowledge?
the video mentioned a lot about how scientists uses past data and observations to predict how the future is going to fold out, even though it's not going to be 100% accurate.
Prediction could be ONE OF THE PURPOSES of scientific knowledge, because these predictions help in allocating resources for the human population, form policies etc.
Why might some people regard science as the supreme form of all knowledge?
Science play a big role in human life. Even the slime in the video that we have never seen might be actually give an impact towards the diversity next affecting human too.
PERSPECTIVES
How can it be that scientific knowledge changes over time?
the video shows how technology plays a role in developing scientific knowledge.
What role do paradigm shifts play in the progression of scientific knowledge?
the video shows how technology plays a role in developing scientific knowledge.
Does the precision of the language used in the natural sciences successfully eliminate all ambiguity?
METHODS AND TOOLS
What is the role of imagination and intuition in the creation of hypotheses in the natural sciences?
From the video, the speaker mentioned how earlier writers wrote about things that comes from their imagination, things that at that time, weren't possible yet.
Example: the anti-depressant pills, the thimble radios (earbuds) and the portable, flat-screen news pad
imagination and intuition does play a role in giving us a peep of the future (even fractals of it) to determine what our science should explore or where they should explore
Is there a single “scientific method”?
In scientific world, there are thousands of methods to discover the truth of the knowledge, however there will be a limited choices of method to discover one particular knowledge - and by limited, there could be only have one or none method to discover a knowledge.
Does scientific language have a primarily descriptive, explanatory or interpretative function?
ETHICS
Should scientific research be subject to ethical constraints or is the pursuit of all scientific knowledge intrinsically worthwhile?
The video mentions on how scientists are employing science fiction writers (probably to give them idea, on possible things to invent and develop, making the once impossible, possible)
some examples are, radical life extension, aka extending the human lifespan (maybe up till we're 180 years old, idk) It makes me think about whether it is going to benefit us more or the other way round.
humankind is greedy, quoting from my favourite tv series: "History has shown us time and time again, that whenever a technological advancement can be used to hurt humanity, it will be." -Clifford DeVoe :)
I MEAN, IMAGINE! if there could be a scientific way to extend the human lifespan, there must be a way to shorten the human lifespan, and imagine if this technology falls into the wrong hands! :(
Do scientists or the societies in which scientists operate exert a greater influence on what is ethically acceptable in this area of knowledge?
scientists play a big role on what will be channel to the society. Whether a knowledge is true or made up, whether it is ethically accepted or not or even whether a knowledge will be shared or not. It all depends on the scientists itself and they have a big bias in science nature.
