Supporting Research.
Alan Baddeley 1966.
- Found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using STM.
- Found that we tend to mix up words with similar meanings when using LTM.

However...
MSM may not be a valid model of how memory works in our everyday lives where we have to remember much more meaningful information. This is because the supporting research requires participants to remember unimportant information.
Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and coding support the existence of a separate long and short term memory, which is the basis of the MSM. These studies used bran scanning techniques and showed a clear difference.
Elaborative Rehearsal.
A limitation of MSM is that prolonged rehearsal is not needed for the transferring of information from STM to LTM.
However...

-
Elaborative rehearsal is needed for long term storage. This occurs when you link the information to your existing knowledge. This means information can be transfered to LTM without prolonged rehearsal.
-
Case studies.
Psychologists have found that different areas of the brain are involved in STM and LTM after studying people with brain damage.
-
Too simple.
MSM says that both LTM and STM are single 'unitary' stores. This explanation is too simple to describe a very complex process of remembering information.
-
Influential model
The MSM was a pioneering model of memory that inspired further research and consequently other influential models, such as the Working Memory Model.
