Types of telescopes:
Other telescopes - radio telescopes observe radio waves from space, although are usually large and expensive. They can be used at any time of day and in bad weather
Space telescopes - objects in space emit various electromagnetic radiations but are blocked by the Earth's atmosphere and can only be seen in space. They can operate at anytime and observe the whole sky, but are difficult and expensive to launch and maintain.
Optical telescopes - observe visible light from space. They can only be used at night and in decent weather
Distant stars and galaxies are too far away for us to reach, so everything we know about them is from analysing the radiation they produce

It's suggested that the universe came into existence as a singularity and rapidly expanded from an extremely hot dense state
A light year is a unit of distance used in astronomy, defined as the distance light travels in one year
Light travels at 3X10^8ms-^1, and in one year it will cover a distance of 9.46X10^15m
