Types of Assessment. There are many types. Determining your purpose for assessment and evaluation will help you select which assessment type best meets your needs.

Formative assessment
= Ongoing; provides feedback to learners as a course progresses; checks on discrete learning points; provides feedback to teachers on learner progress; examples are writing assignments, short quizzes, projects.

Authentic Assessment
= Students perform real-world tasks that provide evidence of application of learning; examples are e-portfolios and "doing something" related to the topic
Summative
= Typically end of unit or end of course tests that assess content knowledge; grade or score awarded; some formative assessment value based on test score results; examples are midterm exams or a final paper.
