Failure of the league, Bernael Britney Peter Frank - Coggle Diagram
Failure of the league
Ineffective sanctions
-
In Manchuria, the League didn’t do effective sanctions by spending a whole year to travel across the sea by boat to northern China to find out that whether China was being invaded or not. After that, they posted the Lytton commition but Japan ignored it and left the league. The economic sanctions had also failed because America still supply resources to Japan.
In Abyssinia, Britain and France ignored the League and simply signed a secret agreement called “Hoare-Laval Pact” which awarded Italy 2/3 of the territories in Abyssinia, in exchange, Italy have to stop attacking Abyssina. The most sanction wasn’t used at all
Lack of arm forces
-
In Manchuria, lack of army is a main reason for the failure of stopping Japan from the invasion. Japan ignored the League because of the lack of army forces, if the League had arm forces they can probably stop Japan from being aggressive by sending troops into China after the economic sanctions failed, but in fact they didn’t have enough force to do that and Britain and France were recovering from WW1 they weren’t willing to send the own troops to the other end of the earth, which themselves will be in danger with a aggressive neighbor Germany.
In Abyssinia, the lack of arm forces didn’t impact the invasion very much because Britain and France would like to keep in a good relationship with Mussolini to be on their side against Hitler. If the had arm force at that time, the two main powers in the League will not probably send army against Italy to break the relationship. In conclusion, lack of army wasn’t a main reason for the failure in Abyssinia .
Absent powers
Key countries particularly the USA, were not in the League
In Abyssinia, this was a problem because if America in a member of the League, it probably will be able to to stop Italy from invading Abyssinia, USA didn’t suffer much in WW1, it was still in power different from Britain and France who were still recovering and didn’t have enough strength such as a money and army to maintain the peace by doing collective security.
In Manchuria, this was a problem because since USA wasn’t a member of the League, it continued supply Japan with resources such as food, oil and so on. So that Japan can continue to invade China and the League didn’t have the right to stop USA from supplying Japan.
Unfair treaty
-
Germany thought that the treaty is unfair that only the defeated power had to disarm this lead to the Anglo-German naval agreement which didn’t went through the League and France was angry with Britain because of that.
