Cocle: This province was created by the Act of September 12, 1855. During pre-Columbian times, the area of Panama which today includes Coclé province had a number of identifiable native cultures.

Veraguas: Diego de Nicuesa was the founder of the capital of Veraguas, calling it "Nombre de Dios" in 1636. It is said that its name comes from the indigenous word "Veracua" or "Viragua", though other theories abound. It is the only province in Panama with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

Chiriqui: The province was officially established on May 26, 1849, when Panama was still part of Colombia. Chiriquí was the province in which Manuel Noriega rose in the military ranks in the late 20th century

Panama: It is the location of the national capital Panama City, which also serves as its provincial capital. The governor of the province is Judy Meana, appointed by President Laurentino Cortizo and sworn in on 16 April 2020.

Panama Oeste:It was created from the five districts of Panamá Province west of the Panama Canal on 1 January 2014, the capital is La Chorrera and it is the newest province in Panama.
