Gullibility is a tendency to be easily manipulated into believing something is true when it isn't.
Credulity is a willingness to believe unlikely statements with no evidence behind them
People are less credulous if information goes against what they already believe.

April Fools' Day is a good time to reflect on the psychology of gullibility and our willingness to believe even absurd stories.

A positive mood facilitates system 1 thinking and gullibility.
The National Intelligence Council recently released their report on foreign threats to the 2020 US Federal Elections. In it, the council cited examples of Russian interference in US elections. They claim Russia worked to weaken public confidence in the electoral process by internationally spreading fake news.
System 2 thinking is the method of science and is the best available answer to gullibility.
Thinking 1 is affected by a positive mood

Manipulate is to change or alter something for our benefit.
Humans are naturally a gullible species.
We tend to shape our rumor and gossip in ways that support our pre-existing stereotypes and expectations. I agree with this because most people believe gossip.
The Nobel Prize is awarded "to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind."
Gullibility is easily believing just about anything. We don't look for support or evidence for fact.
Credulity is believing without facts "a little too quick to believe something, but they usually aren't dumb enough to act on it.
