To the east, the Congo is bordered by mountains as high as 17,000 ft and Lake Tanganyika, providing protection from Kenya and Tanzania.

Ruled by King Leopold II from 1885 to 1908 as the Congo Free State. It was a "personal possession" of Leopold.

The takeover
Leopold's agent Henry Morton Stanley (who signed the treatises with chiefs) explored central Africa between the years 1874-1877, and quickly Belgium gained control of all of the Congo.
In the treatises, villages gave up all their possessions and land for trinkets, cloth, and gin.
