Two Spirit Powwow
Strength
-
this scene that captured this image embodies strength in oneself, the strength it takes to live our authentic selves as Spider comes to the two-sprit powwow as two-spirit for the first time
-
Community
One of the main points behind the two-spirit powwow as discussed in the video was how it invited and welcomed everyone, serving as one welcoming community where everyone came as a collective to celebrate diverse identities, cultures and traditions.
-
Interconnection
How ones identity is interconnected to all other aspects of life such as the land, animals and culture
Happiness
all individuals who participated in the powwow showcased huge smiles on their faces and radiated happiness
-
Confidence
confidence in identity, culture and traditions
Autonomy/Sovereignty
By holding a two-spirit powwow where everyone is welcome it enables Indigenous LGBTQ2S+ individuals to reclaim their identities and assert autonomy over their own bodies
-
Representation
Through the representation of Indigenous LGBTQ and two-spirit people at the powwow, who are confident and share their stories, serve as role models for younger generations who might be questioning their identity
-
Seven Generations
the individuals in the video such as Roger Kuhn, Spider, John Sneezy and Miko Thomas are role models who are helping to change the lives of younger generations who are questioning their identity and feel as though they do not fit into the confines of colonial based systems of gender. These powerful individuals help to pave a way towards more acceptance and honouring Indigenous LGBTQ2s+ identities.
-
Healing
Through dance and movements from the two-spirit powwow it helps to heal colonial binaries that have trapped and confined Indigenous LGBTQ2S+ individuals and instead these individuals are healing through dance and asserting sovereignty over their own bodies and identities.
Decolonizing
This can be seen at the powwow where individuals dance whatever style they please and where there is a circle of women drummers and singers
