Types of 20th century wars
Limited war
its the idea of limiting and constraining the way which war is conducted.
limiting the type of targets that can be attacked.
limiting the amount of weapons that can be used.
deciding the geographical area where fighting takes place.
limiting the degree of mobilization.
limited war was an iconic type of war, like many others in the 19th century. limited war became a necessity in order to prevent a nuclear war.
Limited war is a polemic concept that defines, as opposed to total war, war in which not all the resources at the disposal of the belligerent who consider it in such a way are used.
a war whose objective is less than the total defeat of the enemy.
it does not expend all of the resources at their disposal, whether human, industrial, agricultural, military, natural, technological, or otherwise in a specific conflict.
Civil wars
conflicts fought between 2 factions or regions of the same country
Examples:
Spanish Civil War: Republicans vs Nationalists.
WhenEast Pakistan broke away from Pakistanto become a new country.
fought until one side or the other is victorious or gains its aim
civil war combatants can be identified as either incumbents or insurgents.
there is often foreign countries involving and depending on its role, this could turned into an international conflict.
A civil war is more ‘personal’ and involves people choosing a side and making a commitment for a variety of reasons.
Civil war can arise
people in certain regions of a country feel oppressed or neglected
political divisions
different religious ideas in a country.
Spanish and chinese civil war
degree of political ideology involved (greater than in other civil wars)
Spain: three factors contributed (intense) China: regional differences were less significant than political ideas
Guerrilla warfare
major component and a notable feature of the Cuban revolution and the war in Russia from 1941 to 1945.
Algerian War
Alguerian guerrillas fought french troops.
Vietnam war: It took a costliness on civilians who were often punished for sheltering guerrillas, and by guerrillas for refusing aid and shelter.
key feature of 20th‑century conflicts
small groups of people used ambush and small-unit raids against a larger and less mobile formal army.
Mao (Chinnese communist leader) saw it as a tactic to be used when one is too weak to fight the enemy in a conventional war
it was tactic seen to be employed in war rather than a distinct type of war itself
This type of warfare became common after 1945
people of Asia and Africa were trying to free themselves from the colonial rule and because they had limited military resources, they had to use guerrilla tactics to accomplish it
the belief of masses rising up against capitalist governments supports the guerrilla warfare, and actually, many successful guerrilla movements have been Marxist in orientation.
Technological developments let people become more hideous warriors than before, taking advantage of the global distribution of weapons.
The international coverage provided publicity of what that guerrilla fighters needed in order to win support for their cause.
Total wars
it means that a country uses all its human economic, military, industrial, natural, material, educational and human resources to fight the war, and ensure the victory over their enemy.
create a big fighting force
use all weapons available and develop new ones
the government controls the economy
using civilians in the war effort in industry and home defence.
seen to be an act of violence without compromise, in which states fight to war's natural extremes; it is a war without the 'grafted' political and moral moderations.
here, the contenders are willing to make any sacrifice in lives and other resources to obtain a complete victory, as distinguished from limited war.
a good example of a total war is World War II. wwii is considered a total war because it involved all of the global superpowers of the time and affected the majority of the world's.
