1200-1300 (about 800 years ago)
Maori arrived in NZ
They came in Waka (boats)
They went to many diferent parts of NZ
most of the wakas went to the North Island, a small amount went to the south island
1700 (about 300 years ago)
Maori from Tainui settled in Paparoa
Maoris lived in Howick for about 300 years before Europeans arrived
Maoris liked Howick because they can see enemies coming and they were also able to plant things there
1840
The Treaty of Waitangi
the treaty of wantangi was signed in the area at musick point
1836
William Fairburn and some missionaries made a deal with Maori about the land
1837
Fairburn signed back a third of the land
1841
Nz was given the first European governor
1863
Maori started organisation called "the Kingitanga"
1847-1954
Eleven European ships came to NZ
1923
Europeans name Howick was officially adopted by the council
