Setting: Montresor leads Fortunato down into catacombs
Irony: Montresor suggests leaving the catacombs even though he is the one who lead Fortunato down there- with reason.
Irony: Mr. Nuttel goes to calm his nerves, but ends up getting terrified

Characterization: Jerry is very determined and motivated to swim better because of the older group of swimmers.
Symbolism: Jerry overcoming the feat of swimming through the tunnel represents him coming of age
Characterization: The characters are warned of the risks of the monkey's paw, but still use it because of greed
Plot: The characters learn to not tamper with fate after the death of one of their family members
Suspense: The repetition and mass amount of details used create suspense, turning an 8 minute journey into a whole story
Characterization: Because of his own greed and wish to be the top of his job, Tom cannot resist risking his life for his work
Characterization: The old man is treated differently by the townspeople because he is different. The townspeople are ignorant and insensitive.
Plot: In the end, the old man flies away and finally frees himself from the circus.
Characterization: Both Mr. Ramirez and Mrs. O'Brian are very grateful for the time they could spend together
Plot: Mr. Ramirez is deported back to Mexico after he overstayed his visa by 6 months
