LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE
Stratosphere
2nd Layer of the Atmosphere
50 km from the Earth
Contains the Ozone Layer
Lower part is colder (-60 degrees c)
Upper part is warmer from the suns UV Radiation
The ozone layer protects the earth from UV Radiation
Weather balloons and jets are found in the Stratosphere
Mesosphere
50 kilometers above Earth's surface and ends at an altitude of 80 kilometers
In the outer mesosphere, temperatures approach -90°C
Drop in temperature marks the beginning of the next layer, the Mesosphere
The Mesosphere protects Earth from being hit by meteoroids
Middle Layer of the Atmosphere( 3rd Layer)
Thermosphere
Outermost layer
Extends from 80 km above earth's surface outward into space
Even though the air in the Thermosphere is thin it is very hot, up to 1,8000 degrees c
Northern lights or Aurora Borealis occur here in the ionosphere
Tropospherre
The depth of the troposphere varies from 16 km above the equator to less than 9 km above the north and south poles
Thinnest layer
First layer of the atmosphere
Weather occurs here
Contains almost all of the mass from the atmosphere
The higher you go the colder it gets
At the top of the layer, the temperature stops decreasing and stays at about -60 degrees c
