Jurassic Park Final Discussion 2nd Hour
7th Iteration
Last Iteration felt rushed/unanswered questions.
Felt different from the rest of the book.
Word Choice
Migration:
Questions
Whose fault is it? Can you place fault?
"Whose in charge?" -No one
The investors: they added capital (Gennaro and his firm/Japanese investors). Without them it wouldn't be possible. Didn't fully know what they were getting themselves into. Greed and money.
Hammond: Unbridled ideas. It was his vision that led to the park existing. Greed and money.
Nedry: Turned off all of the power. Catalyst for the downfall of the park. Greed and money.
What is the purpose of Grant, Sattler, Tim, and Lex?
Without them, the reader would root for the park to fail, but with them, the reader has a reason to hope for some safe outcome.
Is this book "good" literature?
Plot
Entertaining story.
Relevance
Genetic modification and cloning (still very much a current topic).
Corporate Greed: the pursuit of money over benefit to humanity.
Technology: The future of technology hard to predict. Also, limitations of human control over technology.
Power and Power Struggle in Sciences/New discoveries: Just because you can, should you? Ethics of invention.
Power of Nature/Lack of human control over nature/The Earth will outlive us.
Structure and Style
Subsections within the Iterations provide multiple perspective and the third person omniscient gives the reader more information.
Allows reader more comprehensive understanding.
Any other perspective would have limited reader knowledge.
Style: Fast paced. Lots of parts were explained.
Iterations: Why this structure?
Characters
Everyone has clearly defined motivations.
Emotional connections developed:
Hammond: focus of reader frustration. Death: Ironic because it was after he blames the issues on everyone else, death is caused by his own grandkids/ironic since he's the one who puts them in danger. His death is in direct contrast to his grandiose personality.
Lex: Negative/frustration with Lex as a troublemaker/bad ideas. 8-years-old. Doesn't understand the severity of the situation.
Malcolm: Important character because of bringing up the big theories (chaos theory, paradigm, thintelligence, etc.). Why does Crichton kill him off? Death as symbol of the voice of reason/common sense is shut out. His death coincides with the park being beyond repair.
Hammond's perspective on his death is the "last rebuke" which would prove Malcolm right and Hammond wrong.
Malcolm's death was more "peaceful" compared to the other deaths.
Tim: Resourceful, easy to root for, great contrast to Lex. -Grant and Tim could be reflections of each other.
Film vs. Book
Film left some parts to be desired.
Depth of book: not as much backstory in the film.
Movies don't go into detail about the science and ethical questions.
Book doesn't turn the dinosaurs into pets or empathetic characters. Book dinosaurs are plot devices vs. movie dinosaurs as characters/sympathetic.
Who is the real enemy? Dinosaurs or people?
