Jurassic Park Final Discussion 1st Hour
Characters
Hammond
Death by Compys: death was sedate/calm. Symbolism in death? The ones he hated were the ones which killed him. Death possibly as an example/symbol of the fall of the park (fall to ditch directly a result of his own carelessness).
Put his grandkids in danger, but the grandkids were directly connected to his ultimate fate.
Ellie
"who is in charge?" completely ignores Ellie
Malcolm
Death: symbolic rebuke of Hammond's folly. Death of voice of reason.
Grant
Loses cool on Gennaro (417).
Terminology
Migration: Significance of using that word.
"In charge" - No one (no one has any idea).
Question
Whose fault is it?
Everyone
Hammond: Pushing the park without foresight/consequences. Greed.
Wu: Did the science too well. God complex. Thintelligence.
Muldoon:
Nedry: Catalyst for computer/park shut down. Greed.
Gennaro: Blind investment; poor choice in backing Hammond.
Purpose of Grant, Ellie, and kids in the book?
Grant and Tim: Explanation tools for the reader.
Lex: Used for suspense and complicating situations.
Sattler: Sounding board for Malcolm/ideas/complex scientific concepts.
Are these characters truly neutral?
Are any of the characters dynamic or do they all remain static?
Gennaro: A little change of perspective, but still "along for the ride."
Is this book "good" literature?
Plot
Keeps interest: fast paced, breaks up complex concepts with sufficient action.
It seems like each plot piece is there for a reason. Not a lot of "filler" plot.
Structure/Style
Iterations and subsections (telegraphing upcoming events).
Episodic
More modern style of writing. Colloquial. Accessible writing.
Graphs and charts: brings reader into the story, adds to realism, aids in explaining the larger scientific concepts.
Relevance: Can still relate to it today?
Ongoing topic of science: Just because you can, should you?
Gender in the workplace
Human effect on climate/endurance of Earth beyond human interference.
Nature's ability to outpace human prediction/control.
Corporate Greed: money at all costs/above human life.
Ego of people in "power" whatever that power may be.
Compartmentalization of knowledge.
Characters:
Each character served a purpose.
Allowed reader to both hate and relate to characters.
Plenty of characters to serve as voices for the reader (reasoning, questions, and frustrations).
Themes
People only take responsibility if the outcome is positive, otherwise they deny responsibility.
