- - - - The Cratchits were a large family but only had four rooms in their house - meant they would have lived cramped, but they couldn't afford anything else because they were so poor.
    - - The Cratchits couldn't afford good clothing, even for Christmas. Christmastime they still wore their everyday dress (rags) but used cheap ribbons to make themselves more representatives - shows that they are poor because they can't afford nice clothing for Christmas.
  - - - Many people are so poor that they haven't even got enough money to enjoy Christmas properly.
