Hereditary predisposition + environmental factors -> Autoimmune reaction -> Release of inflammatory mediators and cytokines -> Chronic inflammation of the synovial tissue lining of the joint capsule -> Proliferating of the tissue forming what is called the "pannus" -> Pannus invades the cartilage and bone -> Erosion of the bone -> Joint destruction
