The Red Box
“He holds it up. The men are bathed in it like some totem from an Indiana Jones film”. - It is a contemporary, modern allusion and they are all male lead movies. Also unrealistic and almost magical in a way.
-
‘It’s just box after box’ relentless corruption, continuous disregard of morals and harm caused (e.g. employees losing everything at the fall of Enron, after investing all of their life savings
boxes are used to show the deception and dishonesty of the corporate world - links to how Faustus is manipulated by the devils - he thinks he is the master but Mephistopheles has ulterior motives in granting him his desires.
The Jet / Planes
Discussion of an affair between Claudia and Skilling in a plane - foreshadows shady dealings of Enron in the future - ‘We fooled around...I went down on you’
'Time with the family. That’s important.’ The use of the company jet for Lay to visit his kids is ironic and contrastive. Emphasises Skilling’s relationship with business and separation from morality
Motorbikes
“Never one to be outshone” - Roe possibly thinks in order to be seen or heard in her misogynistic industry she has to make her actions loud and bold
“One of Skilling’s death weekends, man! Rolling jeeps and motorcycles and wotnot. Someone’s gonna fuckin die”
Motorcycles can symbolize competition, “need for speed” and action, reflecting Roes character as dominating, confident and assertive.
Roe enters on her motorcycle in leather that could symbolise masculinity and hedonism, which the typical biker style being common amongst men.
“Roe makes a grand entrance to the party… on a harley motorbike, dressed entirely in leather”
Floors / Levels
“Revealed on a level above Skilling and Fastow, the Board appear” - to make them seem inhuman and otherworldly, imposing and hellish - parallel to Satan (allowing Faustus to partake in evil)
-
"Appears somewhere high up, not close to him” - 1.6 could show a lack of attachment and Skilling’s daughter is choosing money.
“The Photographer is beneath him to make him look impressive, god-like” - lack of capitalisation on ‘god’ indicates Skilling’s worth - a false idol
‘Like’ indicates Skilling’s focus on perception over action
-
Bubbles (Champagne, Children)
-
-
"Skilling downs his drink.” - 1.1. The alcoholic drink could be relating to ‘Dutch courage’, formulating a double entendre to suggest he is dismissive of the party lifestyle or that he needs some bravery to go get through the evening.
