Identifying faults
Faults arise in all computer systems. The more complex the computer system, the more likely it would run into problems.

The maintained records can then be used to build up a boarder picture of issues that arise regularly and the reliability of computer systems in the organization.
Troubleshooting tools
IT support staff will use some general troubleshooting tools. One is the event viewer. Whenever a computer system detects an error, it will log the problem and as many details as it can collect in this bit of software - which is built into the operating system.
The IT support staff will use this software to find errors that are recorded. This can be valuable sources of information when trying to identify what has went wrong. The event viewer will typically contain:
