Hub
A hub is a cheap, small scale device which allows a group of nearby computers to connect to each other.

Hubs are usually very simple devices that which send all data packets they receive to all devices. It does not route data intelligently.
Switch

Switches conduct packet switching which means that the data is not sent to every connected device, only the desired recipient.
Data can flow through switches at 10gbps. Theses items are essential when managing large quantities of devices and maintaining performance.
Modem

Modems are used to convert (modulate) digital signals into analogue signals, and convert (demodulate) analogue signals into digital signals.
Router

In small networks, the router would provide each connected device with a IP address.
Wireless Access Point
