How do people use water?
Domestic (11%)
Using water for household activities is known as the domestic use of water. Examples are: bathing, cooking and flushing of toilets.
-
-
Industry (19%)
Water is used to cool equipment in factories and power plants because they generate lots of heat when they operate. Water is also used to generate electricity when it passes through turbines installed in dams.

Floods
-
Flash Flood
Caused by exceptionally heavy rainfall over a short period of time. Occur in dry areas where there is not enough soil or vegetation to allow most of the rainwater to infiltrate the ground. Therefore, most of the rainwater becomes surface runoff which floods
low-lying areas
River Flood
Caused by sustained heavy rainfall, or meltwater produced when snow or ice starts to melt. The large amounts of rainwater and meltwater enter streams and tributes, which then flow into rivers. The water level in the river rises rapidly and it eventually overflows the banks, flooding the surrounding area.

Droughts
Occurs when a long period of time of little or no rainfall in a specific area. Droughts can last for months or even years and is lost through evaporation and transpiration. As a result, water sources such as reservoirs and groundwater will start to dry up.
