His economic reforms contradicted themselves, and made him unpopular
Gorbachev also oversaw the end of the Cold War
Ultimately, he only succeeded in creating economic chaos in the coutnry
Allowed the media more freedom of the press, but this ended in long editorials complaining about the government, which was bad for Gorbachev
As the economic and political situation got worse, Gorbachev became a constitutional dictator
However, his policies were not put into practice
People in his own party started opposing him, which made it difficult for him to use the resources his party had

Before Gorbachev came to power, most people understood that the economy was failing
The government was mostly dominated by old men
There was very little non-Russian representation (which continued under Gorbachev)
Gorbachev was one of the first to launch a 'restructuring' of the economy
Unfortunately, the restructuring was not successful due to the amount of bureaucracy required
Initially, Gorbachev believed the economy only needed reforms, but he soon realized that there was a need for restructuring
Ultimately wanted to create a command economy, where the government decides the goods that should be produced, how they should be produced, the quantity of production, and market prices
